Footage from Above drone services based in Rossendale Lancashire helped RBA surveyors to achieve a roof inspection of a commercial property in Heywood. The roof inspection was part of a schedule of a condition report for one of their clients. Traditionally mobile elevating working platforms or cherry pickers are used for such work. These platforms are high-cost often coupled with multiple day hire rates and the risk associated with sending workers at height.

According to the latest HSE statistics, there were also 44,400 non-fatal accidents involving falls from height across all industries. That’s 121 accidents every day.

Over 60% of deaths during work at height involve falls from ladders, scaffolds, working platforms, roof edges and through fragile roofs.

For visual inspections at height drones are very efficient, they can offer a reduced cost over existing methods and reduce the risks to workers at height. Footage from Above utilised their industry-leading Yuneec H520 drone which is ideally suited to this work environment due to its multiple redundancy features including

  1. Six rotors for high safety and redundancy as well as high stability and precision even while experiencing wind and turbulence
  2. Reliable position determination by evaluating GPS, Glonass and Galileo satellites
  3. High-precision, low-interference compass
  4. Sonar based collision avoidance
  5. Carbon Fibre Bumper cage
  6. No data transfer to external servers. Data is secure between the drone and the pilot.

Once on site Footage from Above completed their onsite risk assessments and finalised agreed take-off and landing site. The drone was then put through its pre-flight checks and the drone flight logged on drone assist. An observer was placed on the main road to maintain a safe operational area. The drone was then flown on a pre-set automated flight capturing 23 high definition photos of the roof space, these were later stitched together to produce a live map of the roof structure. Further, close up photos were gained of the various roof vents, soffits, fascias and downspouts and other areas of interest. Images were then uploaded via dropbox which allowed for post-inspection analysis by RBA surveyors later that afternoon.

In total, six units were inspected in 90 minutes with over 70 images taken with both the Yuneec H520 and a 10-metre telescopic camera pole.
